Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Mistwalker Release Date: TBA
What is it? A strategy-focused role-playing game from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. It employs a fair number of SRPG standards, but introduces a shared action-point system that creates an unusual layer of big-picture strategy. Players will have to balance moves and attacks with each turn: Move all your characters to their limit and you'll have no AP left over to attack.
Why should I care? ASH has some seriously surprising production values for a DS game, with pre-rendered, well-animated characters and a ton of full-motion video. It's easily one of the system's best-looking games.
What's the prognosis? Uncertain. While we've liked what we've seen of the Japanese version, and it's earned positive reviews over there, Japanese gamers seem to be responding with profound apathy.

Publisher: Square Enix Developer: Level-5 Release Date: TBA
What is it? The next "true" sequel in the worldwide blockbuster Dragon Quest series, making an exclusive appearance on the DS, complete with colorfully illustrated environments and cutesy, customizable characters.
Why should I care? The real hook here is multiplayer. Yes, multiplayer. In a Dragon Quest game. Through the magic of Wi-Fi, four players can join up to explore the world, taking on enemies in a style reminiscent of a massively multiplayer RPG -- but with the series' trademark first-person, turn-based combat.
What's the prognosis? We're excited. The series may not have quite the same cachet here as in Japan, but it really is one of the most consistently quality RPG franchises out there.

Publisher: Square Enix Developer: Square Enix Release Date: March
What is it? A multiplayer-focused entry in the Final Fantasy series, allowing four players to join up in an action-oriented RPG adventure. The game will feature mild puzzle elements alongside its surprisingly platformer-like qualities.
Why should I care? While the original Gamecube Crystal Chronicles annoyed players by requiring them to tote around a crystal chalice, Ring of Fates dispenses with this little quirk, which should please anyone who ended up drawing bucket duty in the last game. This one will also feature a more in-depth crafting system, with more customizable, varied-looking items.
What's the prognosis? The action focus could turn off fans of the series, but we're looking forward to more companionable adventuring.

Publisher: Square Enix Developer: Square Enix Release Date: Q1
What is it? Another edition in Square's masterful tactical-RPG series. While it lacks the heavy-duty story of the original Tactics -- opting instead for a lighter plot involving magic portals and giant chickens -- the gameplay of the excellent Tactics Advance remains intact.
Why should I care? Like its predecessor, Tactics Advance 2 adds an additional layer of strategy by imposing rules on each battle. You can break them, but at considerable penalty to your ultimate experience points. This time, though, the game also hands out significant rewards for obeying the rules, making the system feel less stacked against you.
What's the prognosis? Sure, it may not be dramatically different from its predecessor, but the last game was so great we can't say we mind. We are a bit more concerned by the game's apparent reluctance to really exploit the touch screen...but the promise of minigames and other diversions to break up the monotony of battle might balance that out.

Publisher: Square Enix Developer: Square Enix Release Date: TBA
What is it? Yes, yes, another Square game on the list. Look, we can't help it if the company is churning out promising DS games. Take this one, for example: Aside from its unwieldy name, this new entry in the Square-Disney mashup series is looking plenty intriguing. It follows the story of Roxas, series protagonist Sora's alter ego (er, sort of), and his Organization XIII companions as they travel throughout Square-ified Disney locations.
Why should I care? Multiplayer RPGs are becoming all the rage, apparently, and this one's no exception: You'll be able to recruit three friends to help you through the game's action-oriented, combo-driven combat.
What's the prognosis? Seems like the Kingdom Hearts series is a love-it-or-hate-it proposition for a lot of people, but we tend to find the games pretty charming. No reason to expect this one will be an exception.

Publisher: Nintendo Developer: HAL Laboratory Release Date: TBA
What is it? Mysterious! We'll admit we know very, very little about this game, but we're told it's to be a remake of Kirby Super Star, which implies it'll be a collection of short-ish platform-style games alongside some more traditional minigames.
Why should I care? However it may sound, don't think this'll be the traditional minigame collection of the sort that's plagued both the DS and the Wii -- think of Kirby's mini-adventures as more like novellas than short stories, if you get our drift. Plus, Super Star had an undeniable charm that made it surprisingly addictive.
What's the prognosis? This one's still so far out that we're reluctant to say too much -- it could squeak in just before the end of the year, but we're not holding our breath.

Publisher: InXile Developer: InXile Release Date: Spring Also On: Wii
What is it? The DS adaptation of the simplistic -- and wildly popular -- browser game. The premise is adorably simple: You draw a line. Then a dude in a sled rides down it. You can make your course as complex or simplistic as you like. The Flash version is just a black line on a white background, but it's looking like the DS version will allow for more visual construction, as well as maybe even some simple tricks on the part of your little, scarf-sporting alter ego.
Why should I care? This is really more of a toy than a game, but it's feverishly addictive. And it hardly needs to be said that the DS is an absolutely perfect platform for this, allowing players direct, hands-on tools for designing complex courses.
What's the prognosis? This is the kind of game that seems almost stupidly simple at first. And then you look up and it's midnight and you've forgotten to put out the garbage. Again.

Publisher: Tecmo Developer: Team Ninja Release Date: March
What is it? A touch-screen adaptation of Tecmo's flagship ninja franchise. And we're not just using "touch screen" as a synonym for the DS -- this is an action game that can be played entirely with the stylus.
Why should I care? Because from what we've played so far, the all-stylus controls work really well. Holding your DS like a book, you handle the action on the touch screen while the other displays a map of the area. Simple combinations of taps and scribbles bring on moves and attacks, and drawing Sanskrit characters activates ninpo attacks.
What's the prognosis? We've seen a relatively small portion of the game, but it looks (and more importantly, feels) great so far. Our biggest concern is the platforming-style segments: They felt a bit sluggish as compared to the frenzied speed of combat. But we're guessing that'll be a small portion of the game.

Publisher: SouthPeak Developer: Venan Entertainment Release Date: Fall
What is it? Almost unbearably adorable. Featuring the stuffed creations of former EGM editor Shawn Smith, Ninjatown is a hybrid strategy/action game in which you build up Wee Ninja forces through careful placement of structures in the style of a real-time strategy game. But actual combat appears to be more hands-on than any RTS.
Why should I care? The story and setting of the game is almost the definition of "off-beat," involving characters like the Ninja Consultant and the Ninja Dropping (yes, that kind of dropping), and attacks like the paralyzing "Long-Winded Story."
What's the prognosis? Brace yourself for a tidal wave of whimsy. We haven't had any hands-on time with the game yet, but we're expecting a broadly accessible game with some fairly addictive elements. Shawn, do not let us down. We know where you live.

Publisher: Sega Developer: BioWare Release Date: Fall
What is it? It's a role-playing game centered around the little blue speed freak and all his pals. Venturing around memorable areas from the Sonic franchise, you'll battle a group called the Marauders who've kidnapped Knuckles. If this all sounds weird to you, just wait.
Why should I care? Because it's being developed by BioWare. Yes, that's the same BioWare who designed Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur's Gate...basically, some of the most highly regarded and enduring RPGs ever to come out of a North American studio. They're making a Sonic game. That 's just...wow.
What's the prognosis? Seriously...wow. We haven't seen the game at all yet, but...BioWare. Wow.![]() | ![]() |
